A village, that is abandoned on every 14th of June. Legend has it that deadly witches, or churels, visit it on that cursed night. Whosoever happens to be there is sacrificed by the churels to enhance their evil power. A kund, where demons are exorcised out of the possessed people. Legend has it that if a pandit of the kund dies an unnatural death, he comes back unless he is beheaded. A jungle, in which no one dares to step on a full-moon night. Legend has it that it is haunted by women who turn into blood-thirsty human bats, or chamgadarni and eat their prey alive. What if the legends are true and you find yourself entrapped in one of these places? What if there is nowhere to escape and your worst nightmare is standing in front of your eyes? And what, if your time is not running out? It is already over. Strictly not to be read by the weak hearted, Dead Never Die is a collection of three terrifying tales inspired by the rural legends of Rajasthan which will shatter your belief that danger lurks only on the city streets, and serial killers can only be humans.
Review
Siddharth's short story collection Dead Never Die is a compilation of three haunting short stories that will scare readers, sending shivers down their spines. The stories are based in rural areas of Rajasthan. The plot of each story is distinct and depicts a unique perspective of each legend with a modern touch. Each had a common trait that the culprit was the part of the victim's team except for the last one in which an outsider took advantage of people's beliefs and framed a woman for being the murderer.
The characters in each story are relatable like the characters of the first one will make readers feel so relatable as their actions and thought-process resonated with modern-day college-going fellows so much that they would not stop giggling at the consequences of their actions. Even when they knew what the consequences could be, they did what was supposed to not be done.
The author's writing style is evocative and engaging. The vivid imagery of the scene and the emotions of the characters in each story will make readers wonder about the author's masterful skill of painting an eerie atmosphere, weaving together local legends with modern anxieties. The author's talent for creating a sense of dread will make readers love the writing style. Two things that appeared a little distracting was the use of cuss words, in places it appeared as if it was forced or used casually, mostly felt in the first story, and the difference of hauntedness in each story. Each tale has a different level of scariness leaving readers to crave for more graveness.
The book will make a good choice for readers who love to read about Indian folklore as in this book, the author brought together lesser-known legends from the rural areas of Rajasthan.
