Blogchatter Bloghop : The Sinister Doll
Late at midnight, when I engrossed myself in the book as it was the thrilling part of the novel, the doorbell rang, and lights flickered. It frightened me, and a chill ran down my spine. Mustering a little courage, I got up to open the door. I made sure to carry a knife to stay prepared for an attack if required.
I hid the knife behind my back, holding it in my right hand. I unbolted the door and found no one on the door. As I was about to close the door, my eyes fell on a nicely packed box with wrapping paper with a print of my favorite cartoon character, Pooh. It left me baffled, but I picked up the box to take that inside, bolting the door again, ensuring to bolt every latch and lock for safety. Instead of keeping the knife in its place, I rushed to the dining table and kept the box on it. I had an eerie feeling seeing the box because I did not find any note or card on the box.
It appeared as if the box stared back at me the way I kept staring at it before deciding to open it. I rushed to get the pair of scissors to unpack the box, hoping to find a note from the sender. As I opened the box, it shook me, and I stepped back. There was a doll inside the package, but to my surprise, the doll was a replica of me. Not just facial features, but the clothing it wore was similar to what I was wearing at that moment. Since it was night, I wore my comfortable pink pajamas and loose-fitted gray t-shirt.
After observing the doll, I noticed her eyes were the same as mine, i.e., brown colored. It seemed that the doll was staring back at me. I juggled through the waste papers inside the box to find a note from the sender but of no use. No sign or symbol could help me identify the sender. I could not figure out what to do, so I called my gang to confirm if they sent me this box. After having multiple rounds of calls, I realized none of my friends or family members sent me this.
I tried to focus my mind to find if I was missing anyone who could send me. After realizing no one from my list was remaining, I wondered if it was a prank or a vile plan of a stranger to send this doll to me. Somehow, I decided to handle this situation in the morning and left the doll on the shelf in the living room. I went to the room without turning towards the doll, still feeling its stare straight into my eyes.
The night was uncomfortable for me. I kept thinking about the incident and did not realize when I slept off. When the sun rays fell on my face from the window pane, I woke up with a jolt as I found the doll beside me giving the same look as the night. I got up and dragged myself to sit at the edge of the bed, covering my face with the sheet. I tried to peep through the sheet but could not muster the courage. The doorbell rang, and I fell from the bed in fear. Ouch. I screamed in pain and ran to the door to find the maid. With a sigh of relief, I felt better as the doll was away from me for some time, and I had someone around.
There were drops of sweat on my brow. The maid asked me if everything was fine. I stammered and convinced her I was okay. I gave her instructions for breakfast and turned to go to the common area washroom, as I did not wish to face the doll again. But to my surprise, I noticed the doll sitting with a weird smile on the dining table. It frightened me to my core. I rushed to the bathroom and freshened up. While in the washroom, I thought about my next step, as it was getting weird with each passing hour. Lost in the train of thoughts, I heard a knock on the washroom door and came out of a trance only to realize that the maid knocked to inform me that she was leaving as her work concluded.
I cried out to the maid and asked her to wait till I came out. The maid agreed. When I came from the washroom, I asked her to stay with me for some time. She felt strange as I never demanded such a thing, and she asked again if I was okay. I gave in and narrated the whole incident that took place at midnight. She covered her mouth with her palm in shock and told me to see a baba who could help me. I shushed her, but she did not deter from her explanations and described a similar anecdote of another house where she worked.
After much discussion, I let her go as she only added more stress. After she left, I looked back at the doll and thought to hide it in the cupboard. To clear my mind, I chose to go out on a solo date in a cozy cafe where I could read and have some coffee with light music and my favorite garlic bread. I did not realize when evening occurred while reading in a cafe, and I had to head back home. There was fear in my mind. But having no choice, I unbolted the door and jumped in fear, seeing the doll lying on the floor with a mark on her neck. I rushed inside and bolted the door. As I picked up the doll, I noticed a paper tucked inside her loose-fitted t-shirt.
With trembling hands, I opened the paper and read, "I will kill you," written with fresh blood. I felt terrified and ran towards my room, having an eerie feeling that someone was following me. Before I could open my door, someone from behind held my neck, and I screamed.
