A place in the sun ... comes at a cost, sometimes!

Mesmerized by the world of social media influencing and its quick fix for fame, Madhur Chopra aka Maddie, escapes from COVID-infested Delhi to tranquil Goa, which provides the perfect backdrop for her vlogs. Armed with dreams of becoming a famous fashion influencer, she ends up in Casa Coutinho-a crumbling-but-glorious Goan mansion-and strikes an unlikely friendship with the landlady. As Maddie's vlogs catches on, her life becomes a heady mix of Insta likes, ever-increasing subscribers and new-found fame, until a horrifying experience shatters her digital dreams.

What will Maddie choose-reviving her influencer persona and striking gold with her designer clothing line, or accepting analogue anonymity forever?

A spirited tale of resilience and reinvention, Goagram takes you behind the scenes to reveal the pain and the goop behind the pouts and glitter on screen.

Review

The storyline has three parts describing each phase of the protagonist's life in Goa. In the beginning, readers will get introduced to her and her life in Goa when COVID-19 commenced. In the second part, the readers will explore the culture of Goa and one of the festivals' celebrations that turned into a mishap. In the final part, the author weaves the story of the protagonist in a different way than she anticipated to live her dreams as a vlogger and influencer.

The author's writing style in this book seems disorganized in three parts. In some places, it appears rushed, while in others, it becomes monotonous and slow. Though the sequence of the events is smooth, readers will feel the book is a diary entry. The first part introduces the protagonist and how a misadventure changed her life. In the second part, readers would sense tension, keeping them glued to the book. In the third part, the readers would notice the story goes smoothly until the rushed ending. The strengths of this book include vivid descriptions of Goa's life and scenic beauty.

The book has distinct characters that readers can connect with, feeling similarities in behavior like the protagonist Madhur. She represents the content creator who aggressively works to share their work and collaborate with brands and sometimes lands in difficult situations due to desperation. Mrs. Coutinho depicts a lonely woman who wishes to have someone to share her happiness and sorrows. Stella is an insecure child who doesn't want to stay with her mother but cannot let her mother adore someone else.

Though the book has beautiful illustrations and the scenic beauty of Goa life, it lacks to be a cohesive and engaging read. Readers may connect to the characters, but staying put to the story seems doubtful. The book portraying "Misadventure of an Influencer" does not leave readers with something concrete as the protagonist could not unveil the harsh reality of the mishappening that shattered her.
