“Love can happen multiple times, in different ways. But life? Life happens only once. Make use of the one real life you’ve got - instead of chasing ghosts of what could’ve been.”

Review
The story follows a love that took fifteen years to bring the protagonists together, a love that was overshadowed by a misunderstanding, leading to loss, grief, and numerous questions about why Sakura did not show up at the airport that day.
It is the story of Sakura and Vikaas, who met in Japan when Vikaas was on his expedition exploring the country. Sakura is a woman whom anyone would fall in love with for her beauty and innocence, and the same happened with Vikaas. He found a way to spend time with her, as he was swooning in love and wanted to see if their relationship could work. Despite her multiple excuses, he convinced her to travel with him as his tour guide across Japan. This journey brought them closer and made them fall harder for each other.
While exploring Japanese culture with Sakura, Vikaas discovered divine places that became his go-to spots, where he would return and make wishes. But their story was not that simple. That journey, along with Sakura’s father’s encounter with Vikaas at their home, changed everything. Sakura received an anonymous tip accusing Vikaas of trapping Japanese girls just to prove himself, as if they were trophies. What happened next is where the story truly begins, ten years after that encounter. You will have to dive into the book to find out more.
The characters’ inner conflicts, monologues, and overthinking make them relatable and real. Sakura, whose mind refuses to let her heart forgive Vikaas for what happened ten years ago, constantly tries not to fall for him again. She is portrayed as a rebellious and independent woman who does not need a man to live a fulfilling life. Her hardworking nature and passion to keep her father’s dream alive through her bar will remind readers how we often go to great lengths to make our loved ones happy.
Vikaas, on the other hand, is obstinate and slightly overconfident, yet undeniably charming. He never fails to draw Sakura back toward him, making her fall in love not once but twice. A man of whims and charisma, his presence adds complexity to their story. Supporting characters, including Sakura’s friend and her family, play an integral role in her journey as she moves toward what she truly wants and deserves.
The author’s writing style is simple and relatable, making the book beginner-friendly. It leans toward a slow-burn narrative centered around emotional healing. One of the best aspects of the book is how it explores multiple themes through this love story, including pain, grief, belonging, love, cross-border romance, and cultural discovery. The vivid depiction of Japan makes readers feel as though they are part of Vikaas and Sakura’s journey. At times, however, the characters’ monologues and inner conflicts may overpower the narrative, which can feel overwhelming. Additionally, since the story shifts between the present and the past, readers might occasionally find it difficult to keep track of the timeline, something I personally experienced.
Readers who enjoy slow-burn romances filled with grief, emotional depth, and a strong sense of belonging should definitely pick up this book.
