Review
Delhi Disco follows the story of Neil Ramamurthy, an Indian-origin American DJ who is on a mission to win back his ex-girlfriend. He travels from America to India for the first time for some local gigs in New Delhi, as his ex-girlfriend Sameera lives there, so that he can stay close to her and put in all efforts to convince her to get married. The story is not merely about their love story, but more than that, it is about a successful woman entrepreneur who wants to thrive in the market by reviving her parents’ dream project, Kapital, the club they curated together before they met tragic deaths. Readers will discover the truth in the book and will be surprised to know how different people with different motives commit crimes, crossing every limit for power, love, and money. It is a full-fledged life journey of a woman who tries to revive her club and fails each time because of these culprits, ending up hurt by reality when she feels everything is finally falling into place. The mystery blows her mind and leaves her shattered, though luckily her life is saved. To know this intriguing sequence of events and the repeated failures in setting up Kapital, you have to check out this book.
The character arc is quite interesting. Sameera is a passionate woman who carries her mother’s business acumen in her genes and puts her heart and soul into bringing Kapital back to life, setting an inspiration for all the women who look forward to following their passion and touching the sky. Neil Ramamurthy is a cool DJ who knows how to win people’s hearts, not just as a DJ but as a human being as well. After one incident after another, it feels like he is too good to be true, and he makes sure to win back his ex-girlfriend and gets engaged to her. Another tragedy unfolds after that, though he never leaves her side and stands as a strong pillar, fighting alongside the police and following every rule as per Indian law. He is an emotional support for Sameera during difficult times. Inspector KK represents the policemen who are always there to unfold the truth without caring about the impact on their careers. Other characters, including Sameera’s manager, who is like a shadow taking care of all her decisions, and the head chef of their restaurant, are masterfully placed in the story. Their roles set the narrative on fire.
The author’s writing style is engaging and gripping. At the point when readers think they know the culprit, the author introduces another twist. It is predictable at certain points, but the end of the story leaves readers surprised and in awe of the way it is written. Not at any point did I think that the murderer or the mastermind behind the conspiracy would be the one revealed in the end, so that was definitely a surprise. I felt a few scenes were underwhelming, such as the death of the social media influencer. There could have been more drama, or perhaps she could have lived until the end, as she played a crucial role in reviving Kapital after the fire incident that almost shut down the club and led to the loss of its license.
Readers who love fast-paced crime thrillers that keep them on their toes will definitely enjoy this book, as it keeps them engaged in a guessing game about what will happen next and who the real culprit is.
