When Jenny sees the picture of a boy in a travel magazine, she is stunned. He is a dead ringer for her friend Rubina. But the boy is supposed to be dead. Ten years ago, Jenny had failed to save Rubina and the infant from the clutches of the charming leader of a dangerous cult who led his flock to a mass suicide.
Jenny’s journey to find the boy leads her to a sleepy village in Rajasthan, where she comes across Virat, a police officer investigating the discovery of a decomposed leg from a construction site. Are the two cases linked? As her past threatens to catch up with her, Virat and Jenny get involved in a cat-and-mouse game that leads to a diabolical climax.
Taking off from the notorious Peoples Temple mass suicide murder led by the charismatic Jim Jones, and told from multiple points of view, Until I Find You is a grim and brutal thriller where the arid landscape of Rajasthan is as much a character as the shadowy dramatis personae.
Review
The story follows Jenny, who is on a mission to save her friend's precious boy whom she could not save ten years back, being a part of a dangerous cult that led to mass suicide where she lost her mother, her friend, and her friend's son. The plot is set in a rural village in Rajasthan where the sequence of incidents from the present leads to the unfolding of the life of the mastermind behind the cult.
The character sketch is quite detailed, and seemingly complex characters are introduced in this book that would allow readers to feel the fear, trauma, pain, and emotions of the characters. Jenny being a compelling protagonist shows resolute determination to find the answers to her mere discovery from the photo she found in the magazine. Virat, a police inspector who did everything to help her even when he knew he would be bashed by the department for his role was insignificant in the eyes of the administrator. The best part is that the role of side characters added depth to the narrative with their flaws, complexities, and secrets they hid.
The author's writing style is engaging and spine-chilling which would grip readers from the unsettling premise to the unfolding surprising conclusion that would lead readers to crave for more. It is a deeply affecting tale discovering the harsh realities of cult and its devastating impact exploring themes including love, loss, and endurance. The author paints the dark and complicated tale of survival, obsession, and unwavering pursuit of love.
It is inspired by the real-life incident Jonestown Massacre led by Jim Jones. The twists and turns will keep the readers on the edge of the bed. For readers who love to read suspense and thriller genre, this book with its atmospheric backdrop, well-drawn characters, and tightly devised narrative, it's a page-turner that explores the dark side of human nature and the enduring strength of the human spirit. It's a compelling read that will stay with you long after you've finished the final page.
