"Look at her. She has started again trying to show off being stronger like boys. I do not understand why she has to do everything herself when boys can do it." Shalini told Supriya about Tarini.
"Right, let her be. You tell me how your preparation for elocution is going? Are you ready to beat her this time?" Supriya probed.
"It's quite good. At times, I feel nervous while at others I am confident that I can do it." Shalini replied.
They walked back to the classroom and were surprised to see Tarini already sitting on her seat scribbling something in her notebook. Supriya walked by her side to have a look at what she was doing. She gasped and told Shalini that Tarini was writing the third draft of her elocution speech. "What??" Shalini shouted, grabbing everyone's attention. She felt embarrassed and apologised, asking everyone to resume their work.
The nervousness was visible on Shalini's face, and she took out her speech and started writing it in her notebook. Before she could continue to finish it, the classroom echoed with the greeting as their Math teacher entered. Shalini stopped and kept her notebook in her desk drawer as she knew if her teacher caught her doing something other than Maths, she would get her name canceled from the competition.
After the class was over, Tarini went to the music room to practice her harmonium lessons. Her teachers were in awe of her talent, and her classmates were jealous of her spontaneity. Wherever she went everybody would praise her, but at times her talent would become a roadblock for her due to society's limited standards.
One day at her family function, a relative went to her mother, Astha, and told her that her daughter was getting out of her hand, and if she did not control her she would have to regret it. Astha looked at the relative with anger but she did not budge at all. After a few minutes, Astha herself had to leave.
"What is it with everyone? Why do they keep telling me that my daughter is out of control and shit? Why do they not keep up with themselves." Astha was cribbing when Tarini came to her and asked, "Mumma, what happened? Why are you talking to yourself?" Tarini giggled. It agitated Astha more. She yelled at her, "It is because of you." There were tears in Tarini's eyes and a sudden realization in Astha's eyes for behaving like other people with her daughter.
Tarini left her mother and ran inside the house to settle in her room, locking it from inside. Before Astha could react and run behind her, Tarini was behind the door of her room lying on her bed controlling her tears from flowing but could not hold back.
"Mumma is also like everyone else. No one understands me, and now my best friend, secret keeper, and safe space has also given up on me." Tarini was mumbling while crying and did not realize when she dozed off.
