Tinku peered from the guard post through the glass door of the living room, which opened to the garden, to see who was in trouble, Shalu or Saurav. Every morning they would throw tantrums, and either one or both fell in trouble at the mercy of their mother, Priya.
"I want a Potato sandwich," Saurav yelled.
"I want vegetable poha." Shalu's voice came from a different direction.
"I have made paneer bhurji, and chapati. Eat silently and go to school." Priya replied to both of them.
Priya's husband, Rahul was sitting at the dining table eating his food in silence while reading a newspaper. He extended his hand to take the cup of tea, which spilled as he was not looking in the direction. "Shit." Rahul rose from his chair. Priya came with a cloth, and said, "I have told you multiple times not to bring your newspaper to the dining table. Why don't you get this simple thing?" "Sorry, sorry. Let me clean it for you." Rahul apologized and took the cloth from her hand. Priya left for the kitchen.
"Oh my god!" Priya shouted from the kitchen. Rahul ran to her, while their kids sat on the dining table pouting and making faces for not getting what they wanted with their plates laid with chapati and paneer bhurji kept in front of them intact. "What happened, dear?" Rahul prompted.
"I burnt chapati while I went to clean the spilled tea," Priya replied. "Don't worry, that's fine. I skipped a beat hearing you scream." Rahul told her and laughed. Priya stared at him, and he just took a step back, and said, "Ok fine. Let's clean the mess."
After cleaning the kitchen, Priya and Rahul returned to the dining table and found Saurav and Shalu still sitting there and their plates had food untouched.
"What is it with you guys? Your school bus is about to come. Finish it and get ready. Your Mumma has kept your lunch in your bags and the water bottle is filled." Rahul told them. Both of them pushed the plate simultaneously, and said in unison, "I don't want this. Why did she not make what I asked her for breakfast?" Rahul and Priya exchanged looks and nodded.
Honk. Honk. "The school bus is here. Now, get going. If you still want I can make a roll and give you or go hungry. When your stomach will growl, everybody will make fun of you." Priya told them. Saurav and Shalu looked at each other, and then at their mother. Priya took it as a sign and grabbed food paper to make chapati rolls with paneer bhurji for them.
Saurav and Shalu left the house and boarded the school bus. Priya and Rahul dropped them off and returned home.
"When will they grow up? Why don't they understand I am not a machine, and I cannot always meet their demands.? Priya complained to Rahul with tears brimming in her eyes. Rahul did not say anything and allowed Priya to vent her pain and let her tears flow through his chest as she kept her head on his chest.
