Hi, I’m Niv, though my parents named me Nivrutti Nandan Nedumpilly Nair—yeah, I know, what a ridiculous name. But trust me, the name is nothing compared to the ridiculousness of my life. And here’s why we call ourselves brats in Sawalpur, a town dominated by the cement plant:

- As children of wage board workers, we faced injustice and weren’t allowed to enter the officers’ colony. But I had the guts to sneak into my girlfriend’s quarters—don’t ask why.

- My best friend, Baiju, had the audacity to have an affair—sorry, a relationship—with the colony’s schoolteacher.

- Our so-called ordinary life was filled with mischief, adventures, and escapades.

- Our shift to an ultra-ordinary life came with reckless schemes and acts of revenge, making the lives of the factory officers, who took their privilege a bit too literally, a living hell—just to prove our worth.

- My problem? I take things to heart and always make sure to get back at those who hurt me. This time, it was the cement company that wronged me, and I made sure to give back royally.

Read The Colony Brats to learn how not to screw up your life—and everyone else’s—with vengeance. Get ready to laugh, cry, and rethink everything as you follow our journey from innocent kids to not-so-innocent troublemaking adults. Outrage can turn your world upside down, and our story is living proof of that.

Review

The story is set in an industrial town in Maharashtra, India exploring themes of social inequality between hierarchical distribution of employment in Cement Plant, leading to sequences of events causing action, drama, plotting, and violence. The basic structure of the story is the depiction of the division of people based on social class or rank the bread earner holds at the workplace, viz. Cement Plant. The lower wage holders or wage board workers are depicted as underprivileged who face injustice and discrimination against all odds in every way possible, including lifestyle, education, and access to basic amenities. But the best part is even when it appears the protagonist lost the battle there comes a turn that leads to a satisfactory ending that every reader will crave in this story.

The well-portrayed characters are relatable and complex, showcasing deep emotions, vulnerabilities, and challenges. Niv, the protagonist, represents a compelling character full of ego and determination who turns out with a changed heart in the end, realizing his mistakes. Similar characters will allow readers to reflect upon themselves. The story also brings in the scene from school that will make the readers feel nostalgic and reminisce about their school time with their friends. Even the supporting characters in the story will teach a lot to the readers making them feel at home.

The story goes through a shift of writing style from engaging, witty and descriptive keeping the essence of joys and struggles of humans in the book. It is simple and easy to go along with, but readers who love fast-paced reading may feel distracted by detailed accounts trying to cover even minute details. With a pinch of humor, this author expertly explores serious themes like injustice and discrimination against workers at lower rank portraying the reality of the corporate world indirectly though in this story the focus is on workers of cement plants struggling with basic amenities and conditioning to work for the success of the company hampering their health.

Readers who love to explore social dynamics and the power of friendship and resilience will love to read this book. The overall experience of reading this book is satisfying as it teaches different lessons in life.
