Review

Shenoy's The Homecoming is a sequel to her novel A Place Called Home. The plot continues the story from the first part, exploring new themes and further complexities in the characters' relationships and lives. From village to life in a big city, the story revolves around a coffee estate in Sakleshpur to the buzzing roads of Bangalore as the life of the female protagonist turned upside down with a tragedy that shook everyone in the estate, leading to opportunities and time for mending the lives with the onset of enhancement in estate increasing employment. The mix of present-day narrative with flashbacks will allow readers to stay updated with the characters' lives, keeping them with the story till the end.

The new characters introduced in this story are well-developed. From narrating their pasts to showcasing their complexities and vulnerabilities will let readers feel sympathetic to them. Readers would resonate with the female protagonist, Alka, as she delves into her journey of self-discovery in this book, where she finds herself flawlessly taking the lead in the coffee estate, turning it into heaven, and getting all the praise from the people because she changed their lives for good.

The author's writing style is engaging and expressive. At points, readers would find unwanted or too much detail, which does not seem necessary, ruining their experience, forcing the length and reducing the depth of the story. But one thing that stands out in her writing is the ease of understanding. For beginners in reading who want to explore some themes like family dynamics, love, betrayal, loss, and forgiveness, this book will provide them food for thought delving into the complexities and impacts of the past on the present.

The writing is engaging but for seasoned readers, it would be effortless to guess plot points in different moments in the story, especially those of betrayal and familial dynamics. Readers who are fans of the author's writing would love this book even though there are predictable plot points, the book will allow them to resonate with compelling characters.
