While investigating a spate of unexplained deaths in a remote village, Mumbai-based journalist Mamta learns of the dakini: a bloodthirsty entity that haunts the surrounding forests, leaving mutilated corpses in her wake.
As the villagers' terror grows, so does their dangerous suspicion of women. With lives on the line, including her own, Mamta is dragged into a race against time-all whilst trying to escape her traumatic past, which threatens to turn her own mind against her.
By bestselling horror writer K. Hari Kumar, Dakini is a thrilling depiction of human courage in the face of terrifying adversity, and of superstition dwarfed by the power of the supernatural. It is a tale that is not easily forgotten.
Review
Dakini is a story set in a remote village of India called Birpoor that follows the life of the female protagonist, Mamta, an international journalist. From unfolding the secret of her birth to her haunting experiences of adulthood, the story profoundly showcases the social status of Adivasi women. Readers would love the raw description of the livelihood and the vulnerabilities that the author did not miss in bringing through this story. Mamta's voyage to Birpoor leads to unexpected incidents that turn the lives of villagers upside down, exposing the sinister deeds and wrongs done against them, especially women, as she dives deeper to prove the superstitions had nothing to do with the Daagi woman in the village.
Readers who love to grasp the horror genre will love the author's writing style. It is evocative and vivid imagery of the setting of the horror atmosphere in the village that will keep the readers hooked. Though the plot lines appear guessable at points, readers would find it engaging to know how the truth of the culprit comes out. The author skillfully creates suspense, bringing in supernatural elements and tension within the community about their beliefs together.
The character development with relatable characters will allow readers to find themselves in the story, picturing them as a part of the story. Like Mamta, a fierce woman who can do anything to set things right, risking her life, multifaceted villagers, from Kallu, Mishra, and Arjan to Pande, Shera, and Kusum there were people of all sorts depicting deep emotions and vulnerabilities at their best.
The best part is the ideation of this story. Readers will be amazed to realize that it is not merely a horror story but offers moving commentary on social injustices that still prevail in small villages of the country. The twists and turns crafted by the author in this story will keep the readers hooked throughout.
It is a highly recommended book for lovers of suspense, horror, and literary fiction.
