Review
Shobhita Narayan’s Midaash & Maitreyi’s Magical Mayhem is a short story collection with six stories featuring two siblings Midaash and Maitreyi. This collection explores the adventures of these two kids in and around two kingdoms, Saluka and Taluka whose queen and king had magical spells and tried to control each other's destiny by misusing their magic along with protecting the people of their kingdoms.
Readers can read each story as a standalone though the characters explored in different stories may have their adventures explored in other stories, like the three stories known for having rounds in forests and using their magic. One common attribute used in this book was the game of chess.
The kids would love to explore these stories with characters inspired from well-known fairy tales. The characters like Kesha with her magic in her long hair imitating Rapunzel, Rani Sheeth from Frozen, Midaash a man who received the wish to turn everything into gold, etc. With the kids playing the roles of quirky characters and humorous events, this book would turn out a perfect read not just for young kids, but for adults reminding them of their childhood when they heard or read the stories of these characters.
The author skillfully incorporates traditional fairy tale elements with contemporary themes, creating a fresh and unique narrative. This collection is both engaging and imaginative with vivid descriptions of the two kingdoms and the events that unfold in the adventure of Midaash and Maitreyi with their friends and village people.
The best part is that the stories impart valuable lessons about friendship, kindness, and the importance of believing in oneself like the original fairy tales. The addition of whimsical illustrations in each story enhanced the reading experience, adding a visual dimension to the narratives.
Though the book aims at a specific age, it will turn out a delightful read for adults too. So, if you are looking for a captivating and heartwarming fantasy story collection with a touch of Indian cuisine and culture, this book will make a perfect choice.
