Blogchatter A2Z: Water Scarcity

How would it be to face water scarcity in a world of plentifulness?

Due to urbanization, people started moving from villages to cities, leaving behind pure resources to embrace polluted life. In this queue, Saksham joined his friends and moved to Bangalore. A few months back, he interviewed for an MNC based out of Bangalore, and little did he know that he would embrace crisis, accepting that job offer. Being an engineer, sitting unemployed at home was depressing for him. Finding the first opportunity, he could not resist and left home.

Saksham had few friends already living in Bangalore, so he did not face issues finding a place to live. He lived with his childhood friend Aman for the first few weeks and later shifted to a PG in HSR Layout. His job went smoothly with distinct perks, making his life easier in an expensive city like Bangalore. He worked on rotational shifts. So he received a cab facility to and fro and a meal at the office with tea and snacks. He would work diligently the whole week and party with his friends on weekends.

One day, when he woke up, his roommate told him that he left some water in a bucket to freshen up as the area had been affected by a water supply cut. He woke up jolted and yelled, "What?" He got onto his feet and confirmed if his roommate meant there would be limited water. He ran to the bathroom and returned, complaining that his roommate did not spare enough water for him. His roommate got agitated and told Saksham to behave maturely and use water judiciously.

Saksham freshened up to go to the mess and witnessed empty chairs and no food. He felt surprised and rushed to the reception to inquire about breakfast. The receptionist informed him that the cook could not prepare food due to water scarcity. He yelled at her, but she tried to keep calm and asked him to eat outside for the day. The day began with chaos. Saksham went to the office in the hope that he would get something to eat in the office cafeteria. As he reached the office, he found the cafeteria was full. People were having breakfast and packing for lunch. Before he could get something to eat, the cook told him that the food was over. He could get something to eat at lunch if he came on time.

Feeling remorseful, he went to his cubicle half-heartedly. His manager asked him why he was sad. He informed his manager about the situation he faced since morning. His manager started laughing and told him that it was usual he should get habitual as water scarcity keeps affecting the area. Saksham felt disheartened. While in the office, he noticed many people were coming out of the changing room with towels hanging on their shoulders. He asked one person and realized they woke up late in the morning and could not get water to get ready, so they came early to start their day by taking a bath in the office.

It was amusing yet saddening. When Saksham was leaving, he noticed many people sitting in the office in the late evening. He happened to ask one of his colleagues, and he told him that there would be water scarcity, so they decided to stay in the office to avoid water crisis while at their flats and pgs. Saksham thought to do the same but did not get enough resources to remain at the office. He decided to go PG that day and return with enough resources the next day to manage his life in water scarcity.

  1. Water crisis is real and I hope more and more people start using this resource judiciously otherwise this will be the situation of the whole world and not just one city
