Blogchatter A2Z: Gender Inequality

Rashi and Aarav were best friends. They grew up together, living in a neighborhood. Their fathers were childhood friends, and so were they.

After completing their school, they joined the same college for the same course. They were close-knit and helped each other in their studies. With the passing years, they entered the final year of college. It was a crucial time for them. They had to secure a job to pursue after college and start their professional life.

Soon, the placement started, and Rashi and Aarav kept busy. They could get time to relieve themselves until they got placed. One day, a company GC came to their college, and they decided to crack its interview. They wanted to start their profession together at school and college. After multiple rounds of interviews, they met and discussed their performance. They manifested to get the offer from this company.

Four hours later, the interviewers announced the results, and guess what? Aarav and Rashi were the only students who got placed in GC. They started dancing and hugged each other. They were elated. Immediately, they called their parents and shared the news, emphasizing more about the other person's selection.

Soon, they sat for their final examination, and college ended. After a few months leaving college, they had to join the GC office in Gurugram. Aarav and Rashi went home and celebrated with their families to cheer for the new beginnings.

On the first day of May, Aarav and Rashi joined GC. They received a welcome kit and attended an induction program. In induction, the presenter asked many questions to the new joiner. They both participated in discussions and shared their goals and visions of joining this company. From the next day, life began with a new schedule and assignments for them. Although, they got a chance to join the same team.

Fast forward to two years…

They completed two years in GC, and it was time for promotion. Both assumed they would get promoted. But this time, destiny had another plan, and only one of them got promoted. In a meeting hall, the team gathered for announcements. Aarav and Rashi sat together, holding each other's hands and praying to God. The manager announced Rashi's name, and everyone applauded. Aarav was the one who cheered for her. They were hoping for one more name, but the manager proceeded with higher level promotion.

Aarav's face saddened, and Rashi tried to console him. As soon as the meeting was over, Aarav went out, and Rashi followed her, but she could not catch him, and he was nowhere to be seen. Rashi searched for him but could not find him. While searching for him, she heard her manager talking to her mentor.

Mentor: Why did you not promote Aarav? He deserved this promotion.

Manager: There is a reason behind it. Promoting a female candidate was necessary as they could get more work done flawlessly. Aarav was deserving, but I delayed his promotion so that he felt impotent and delivered more work than expected because now Rashi would lead him.

It surprised her, and she decided to face her manager. But Aarav was watching all this from a distance and stopped her. She tried to get out of his hold. But she could not and listened to what he had to say.

Aarav told her it was corporate politics and that she should not get into it. He would handle it and plan to give them a shock by resigning. She smiled and nodded.

  1. How shocking that such thinking and actions are prevalent even today. Good call by Aarav to stop Rashi and decide to quit such a firm

    1. Yes such things still exist. Though both genders are affected at their levels

  2. It is so sad that corporates seem to thrive on such politics rather than getting people to align to their version and allowing everyone's strengths to shine through.
